RIGA - A before the European Council meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky talked with the Prime Minister of Latvia Krisjanis Karins (New Unity), thanking him for Latvia's support in granting Ukraine the status of a EU candidate country.

Zelensky wrote on his Twitter that this decision is important for Ukraine and for Europe as a whole.

Zelensky and Karins also discussed the situation regarding Ukrainian grain exports.

As reported, Karins will be attending the European Council meeting of June 23-24, where Ukraine's status as becoming a EU candidate country will be decided.

As LETA was previously informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Latvia's main goal at the European Council is for Ukraine to be granted EU candidate country status.

Latvia's position also stipulates that the EU and its member states must continue to provide all types of support - financial, humanitarian, material - to Ukraine.
