Western allies 'on the same page' on peace talks - Silina

RIGA - Western allies are "on the same page" on the issue of peace talks to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) told TV3 this morning.

Commenting on Tuesday evening's talks between the partners of the coalition of the willing, the Latvian politician said that it was felt that everyone was "on the same page", including the US, which is ready to fully engage.

According to Silina, the "leaked peace plan" of about a week ago was not what the US really wanted to talk about with Ukraine, but a compilation of Russian interests.

Asked if and when the next round of talks could lead to real peace, Silina said it was impossible to say at the moment. What is clear is that the initial date of the US Thanksgiving holiday has been removed from the agenda as the date for a final agreement. Tuesday's talks also concluded that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is still not ready for a ceasefire.

In such circumstances, it is important to "move forward with frozen Russian assets" in order to start using them for Ukraine, Silina noted. It is also necessary to move forward with new sanctions packages against Russia, the politician argued.

As reported, Silina took part in a video call with the leaders of the Coalition of the Willing in support of Ukraine on Tuesday evening. The Ukrainian president and US secretary of state also took part in the meeting.

In recent days, the US peace plan, the first version of which has been assessed in Europe as highly unfavorable to Ukraine and strongly oriented towards satisfying Russian interests, has been actively discussed internationally, thus politicians are working to make adjustments to the plans.
