VILNIUS - The Vilnius-Riga train service, launched in December 2023, is set to be extended to Tallinn from early 2025, with the exact travel time to be known once all train schedules are coordinated.
Rail operators from the three Baltic countries - LTG Link, Vivi and Elron - are currently aligning their schedules to enable passengers to travel from Vilnius to Tallinn with two transfers: in Riga and Valga, the passenger subsidiary of Lithuania's state-owned railway company Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways, LTG) said on Monday.
"This is a major strategic step forward and an example of cooperation among the three Baltic countries in connecting our capitals," LTG Group CEO Egidijus Lazauskas said in a press release.
"Our teams continue to work to make it possible to reach Tallinn with just one transfer," he added.
Starting next week, Vivi will operate a train from Riga to Valga, Estonia, aligned with LTG Link's Vilnius-Riga train, with a transfer time of almost 20 minutes. From January 6, 2025, a daily Elron train between Tallinn and Valga will also be aligned with the schedule.
LTG Link CEO Kristina Meide said the new connection will provide train access not only to Tallinn but also to the Estonian city of Tartu.
Until now, it has not been possible to travel from Vilnius to Tallinn by train in a single day, according to the operator.
