RIGA - The local government of Ventspils is closing the port city's representation office in the Latvian capital Riga, LETA was told at the local government.

Ventspils City Council has passed regulatory amendments to wind up the structural unit Ventspils Representation in Riga and establish a new structural unit Centralized Accounting.

According to the city's spokespeople, the closure of the representation in Riga is a result of an organization overhaul of the city's administration.

The annual costs of the representation are an estimated EUR 55,000 and the city hopes to save more than half of this amount as a result of the overhaul.

Ventspils, however, will still have representatives in Riga as several of the municipal officials are working in the capital city.
