Vegvisir: navigating the future of battlefield awareness

  • 2025-06-13

In today’s rapidly evolving security landscape, the ability to clearly perceive and react to unfolding situations on the battlefield is more crucial than ever. Enter Vegvisir—a defense technology company born out of Estonia and Croatia—which is working to redefine how military personnel interact with their environment through immersive Mixed Reality (MR) solutions.

Founded by a team of defense veterans and tech innovators with real-life operational experience, Vegvisir was inspired by the challenges its team faced in conflict zones. That’s why we’re proud to have veterans from the British Royal Marines Commandos and the Estonian military as part of our team. Many of our key personnel have also been involved in developing advanced simulation and situational awareness technologies. Their mission: build tools that directly respond to the needs of operators in high-pressure environments, where seconds and visibility matter.

At the core of Vegvisir’s technology is a ‘see-through-armor’ capability—offering a 360-degree field of view from within armored vehicles. Traditional periscope systems or small-screen displays offer limited visibility. Vegvisir’s XR solution connects cameras mounted around the vehicle to a head-mounted display, giving soldiers a real-time, immersive panoramic view, overlaid with mission-critical data. This significantly reduces blind spots and improves crew coordination.

Partnerships have played a key role in shaping Vegvisir’s development. Collaborations with Estonian defense leader Milrem Robotics have enabled Vegvisir to integrate its visual interface with unmanned ground systems. Joint efforts with the Estonian Defence Forces have allowed the team to test and refine the system in demanding, real-world scenarios, ensuring operational readiness from day one.

Earlier this year, Vegvisir unveiled its newest innovation—the Virtual Command Station—at IDEX 2025. Built as a mobile, modular alternative to traditional command posts, the system replaces large screen setups with an interactive mixed-reality workspace. Using Vegvisir’s Visor headset and Mission Grip device, commanders can interact with real-time battlefield data in a spatial, intuitive format. It’s designed to integrate easily with NATO-standard C2 systems and enhance remote decision-making.

To stay ahead in a sector defined by rapid change, Vegvisir’s systems are built on a modular software architecture. This makes it easy to adapt the interface and capabilities to different vehicles, missions, or future technologies—whether integrating AI-driven data, sensor fusion, or new unmanned platforms. The company’s focus on seamless integration with allied systems ensures that its products not only meet NATO standards but can plug into a wide range of allied technologies without friction.

Testing and validation have been essential. One of Vegvisir’s notable deployments was with the Australian Army, where the system was trialed on uncrewed M113 armored vehicles. Feedback from soldiers and commanders pointed to the intuitive interface, fast learning curve, and improved environmental awareness as standout features. Such field trials have directly influenced updates to the product, reinforcing Vegvisir’s commitment to listening to end users.

With unmanned platforms becoming increasingly common, Vegvisir has ensured its system works just as well for UGVs and remote operators. Through the Vegvisir Remote solution, situational awareness can be extended to teleoperators controlling autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles, offering the same level of immersion and spatial orientation from a distance.

While Vegvisir’s current focus remains on the defense market, its team sees potential in other high-stakes industries. Emergency response, disaster relief, and search-and-rescue operations all face challenges in visibility, coordination, and real-time decision-making. The same technology that helps a vehicle commander navigate an urban battlefield could one day help firefighters or humanitarian teams work faster and safer in disaster zones.

Looking ahead, Vegvisir’s priorities for the next five years include refining its XR platform, expanding its footprint across NATO and allied countries, and continuing to innovate around immersive command and control. With a strong foundation, battle-tested feedback, and a clear vision for the future, Vegvisir is well-positioned to shape the next generation of battlefield awareness.
