TALLINN - A court in the US state of Minnesota issued an arrest warrant for Estonian national Helena Koivu on Thursday after she failed to appear at a court hearing on Oct. 25, the online news site Elu24 reports, citing the Finnish publication llta-Sanomat.
Under the indefinite arrest warrant, Koivu may be taken into custody by the Hennepin County sheriff or any other authorized law enforcement agency. She may later be released on bail of 500 euros.
The divorce case of Helena Koivu and former ice hockey player Mikko Koivu, a Finn, has been ongoing in court since 2020 and was finalized this January.
The Koivus lived for many years in Minnesota, where Mikko Koivu played for the Minnesota Wild ice hockey team, serving as captain from 2009 to 2020. Mikko Koivu moved to Turku, Finland, with their three children in July of last year.
Helena Koivu has repeatedly requested that her children be returned to the United States. She also appealed for sole custody, which was not granted.
