TALLINN - A popular science book by Ain Raal, a professor of pharmacognosy at the University of Tartu, titled 'Medicinal Plants from the Home Cabinet: Teas, Infusions, Powders, Ointments: Preparation and Use,' provides science-based yet practical guidance on how to correctly and safely use medicinal plants at home.
Many books on medicinal plants have been published in Estonia, indicating that this field resonates with and fascinates many, said Professor Raal. However, according to him, existing literature primarily focuses on the effects of medicinal plants, with less attention given to the practical aspects of preparing herbal remedies at home. Thus, the newly published work fills an important gap in Estonian literature on the subject.
"Plants often contain very small amounts of beneficial substances, and if we prepare and use home remedies from herbal drugs incorrectly, we can unfortunately lose out on even the little that nature has to offer," explained Professor Raal. "It is crucial to get the maximum from what nature provides."
The book provides a thorough overview of the chemical composition of medicinal plants and their effect on human health. It also covers the collection, drying, and storage of herbal drugs and explains the principles of active ingredient extraction and distillation.
Readers will also find practical tips for preparing various infusions and decoctions, alcohol and oil extracts, as well as herbal juices, syrups, tea blends, wraps, poultices, compresses, and ointments. The text is supported by 24 tables, including a comprehensive overview of the use of medicinal plants during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
The book 'Medicinal Plants from the Home Cabinet: Teas, Infusions, Powders, Ointments: Preparation and Use' is available on the health publisher's website.
