RIGA - Ukraine's victory is a precondition for sustainable peace in Europe, Saeima Speaker Inara Murniece (National Alliance) said today during a meeting with Olena Kondratiuk, Deputy Chairwoman of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada, as Saeima Press Service informed LETA.

"Ukraine's complete victory, its independence and full restoration of its territorial integrity is in our interest. This is a precondition for sustainable peace in Europe," Murniecec said during the meeting.

The two officials discussed support for Ukraine in three dimensions - political, practical and moral. "The developments in Ukraine are changing history all over Europe and the world. New concepts are emerging much more clearly in politics and in our lives. We see that in today's world, there is a place for heroism, we need to be able to take the right side, to choose what values we will protect," said Murniece.

Latvia supports the sanctions against Russia and international isolation of Russia, said Murniece. We support granting Ukraine the status of a European Union's candidate country, she emphasized, adding that Ukraine's accession to the EU would be a far-sighted step that would help strengthen both Ukraine and the West as a whole. She also said that Latvia would continue to provide practical, including military, support for Ukraine.

Kondratiuk thanked the Latvian parliament, the government, as well as the people of Latvia for their support both at the international level and in providing support for the people of Ukraine fleeing the war who had arrived in Latvia.

Besides Murniece, Saeima members Dagmara Beitnere-Le Galla (Conservatives), Inese Libina-Egnere (New Unity), Inese Voika (Development/For), Aldis Adamovics (New Unity), Uldis Budrikis (Conservatives), and Anda Caksa (New Unity) also participated in the meeting with Kondratiuk today.
