TALLINN - According to Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, Hungarians clearly chose the rule of law and a European path on Sunday, marking a historic moment for both Hungary and the whole of Europe.
"The election result creates a new and significant opportunity within the European Union to restore and strengthen constructive cooperation with Hungary," Tsahkna said. "Europe needs unity today, and the clear decision of the Hungarian people offers new hope."
Tsahkna stated that Estonia looks forward to cooperating with Hungary's new government, emphasizing a shared interest in ensuring that decisions vital for strengthening European security can move past the current stalemate, which has been influenced by Kremlin interests, particularly concerning support for Ukraine and EU enlargement.
"It is crucial that we move forward swiftly with releasing the €90 billion loan package for Ukraine, adopting the 20th sanctions package, and advancing the EU's enlargement process to include Ukraine and Moldova. These decisions are critical for European security, stability, and credibility, and they demonstrate Europe's readiness to stand firm for its values," the foreign minister said.
"We also expect this new political mandate to bring positive changes to Hungary's approach to the principles of the rule of law. A strong rule of law, an independent judiciary, and the protection of fundamental freedoms are the cornerstones of the European Union's functioning," Tsahkna stated.
According to Tsahkna, closer and more trust-based cooperation with Hungary will help strengthen the entire European Union, increase our collective resilience, and promote peace, security, and democratic values in Europe.
