RIGA - The Chairman of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee Rihards Kols (National Alliance) expressed his pleasure that the understanding and position of the new British Prime Minister Liz Truss regarding Russian aggression and the necessary support for Ukraine, while she served as British Foreign Minister, was very clear.

Britain's actions is important within NATO because it is one of the "coalition of the willing" countries, or those that stand up for Ukraine and its struggle for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its country, said Kols. For now, he sees no indication that Britain's firm position in support of Ukraine could change.

The politician positively assesses the actions of the Conservative Party of Great Britain by choosing Truss as the Prime Minister. According to him, the new government of the country will include strong ministers, including the former head of the British Foreign Affairs Committee, Tom Tugendhat.

Truss will have to deal with various Brexit-related issues, but it is more about British domestic politics, Kols said. According to the parliamentarian, Truss has taken a pragmatic approach in her activities so far, and, in his opinion, no special deviations from the current foreign policy course of the country are expected.

According to Kols, the main priority for the incoming prime minister, similar to elsewhere in Europe, will be strengthening energy security. The issue of China's growing influence in Europe will definitely increase on the British agenda, said the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
