RIGA - US President Donald Trump is considering transferring Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine and imposing additional sanctions on Russia, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said on Thursday at the Riga Conference security and foreign policy forum.
He noted that Trump is "personally convinced of the need for a just peace" and is "humanly shocked by the number of casualties". Whitaker acknowledged that the US President sees a "new phase" in the war, in which Ukraine could possibly regain some of the occupied territories.
The US ambassador also stressed that Washington was working closely with European partners to help countries move away from Russian energy resources. He pointed out that some allies still buy Russian oil through pipeline systems, but that the US is working with each of them to end this dependence as soon as possible.
He pointed out that Trump wants NATO to be not only a military alliance, but also an economic and political alliance. The Ambassador stressed that the US and allies are increasing pressure on Russia to bring Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.
"We are doing many things that we did not do in the spring. This pressure is growing and we have many cards to play," the ambassador said.
Whitaker stressed that the goal is a "just and sustainable peace" in which Ukraine maintains its independence and its ability to defend itself. He said the US President wants the war to end, but not at Ukraine's expense.
