The Ignalina district – known as the land of lakes in eastern Lithuania – invites visitors to discover experiences that linger and offer a pause from the rush of everyday life. Here, travel becomes more than visiting places; it is about building a deeper connection with the environment through authenticity and a mindful, slower pace.
One of the region’s highlights is Aukstaitija National Park, where visitors can explore nature through a variety of activities. Walking trails wind through hills and along lakes, while cycling routes pass through forests and traditional villages. Water routes are especially abundant, with more than two hundred lakes in the region, offering opportunities for boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and more. Each journey becomes an immersive experience – observing light on the water, listening to the forest, and enjoying a sense of calm.
Paluse – the heart of Aukstaitija National Park
The village of Paluse serves as the vibrant center of the park. In summer, it is lively, while in winter, it becomes peaceful and quiet. Visitors can explore the oldest wooden church in Lithuania, an ancient plant garden, the Aukstaitija National Park Visitor Center, campsites, rural tourism homesteads, and two beaches. The sunsets over Lake Lusiai are especially memorable.
Water activities are a major attraction in Paluse. Visitors can rent kayaks, boats, and paddleboards, or try a unique night safari in LED-lit kayaks with a guide. The lighting reveals underwater life and creates an almost hypnotic experience. The guesthouse “Tiki Inn” offers this activity along with electric bike rentals, sound therapy sessions using quartz sand bowls, massages on a floating pontoon, and accommodation in Polynesian-inspired lodgings. Women-only summer camps provide additional opportunities for relaxation and self-reflection.
Experiences that heal
Near Paluse, the Asalnai Campsite offers a deeper immersion in nature. Located in a quiet forest by a lake, it provides options to stay in tents or domes, fish, kayak, paddleboard, or hike independently or with a guide. Visitors can also enjoy Tibetan or classical massages outdoors.
These nature-based experiences promote relaxation, improve well-being, and help restore balance. After a day outdoors, guests can enjoy food prepared over an open fire or unwind in a hot tub or sauna, all integrated harmoniously into the natural surroundings.
Journeys revealing regional identity
A new tourism route in the Ignalina district, “Identiteto kelias” (The Path of Identity), is a cultural and historical route inviting travelers to discover the unique spirit of the region through stories, traditions, and living heritage. Along the way, visit historic churches, manor estates, ancient hillforts, and artisan spaces. Meet local communities, taste traditional foods, and experience crafts, music, and authentic storytelling. Highlights include Paliesius Manor, the mysterious Antakmene rock, Naujasis Daugeliskis community centre, hands-on pottery workshops, and local cheese degustation. This journey offers more than sightseeing – it’s a chance to feel the true essence of Lithuania and connect with its past and present.
Summer events in the Ignalina region
During summer, the region hosts a variety of cultural and entertainment events. On June 27, the village of Naujasis Daugeliskis holds an annual celebration that revives traditional village life, featuring educational activities, music, and scythe mowing competitions.
From July 14 to 19, Ignalina will celebrate its 160th anniversary with concerts, events, and community gatherings. On August 1–2, the festival “Paluses regata“attracts sailing and water sports enthusiasts. On August 15, the Honey Harvest Festival in Stripeikiai village showcases traditional beekeeping and offers a warm, authentic atmosphere.
