RIGA - Education of Latvia's people must be a priority, therefore teachers must be provided with competitive salaries and a balanced workload, President Egils Levits said as he greeted education employees on Teachers' Day.

In his statement the president urged members of Latvia's next parliament to "prove in deeds" that they keep their promises given to teachers before the elections.

The profession of teacher is extremely important because it is from teachers that the next generation receives knowledge and skills, and it is the teachers that pass national values on from generation to generation, the president said.

Levits indicated that Latvia has competent, creative and wise teachers who work despite all harships.

The president wished the teachers endurance, self-confidence and unfading vitality.
