Tallinn-Tartu-Riga train begins regular service

TALLINN - The first scheduled train on the Tallinn-Tartu-Riga route will depart from Tallinn's Baltic Station at 2:50 p.m. on Monday, arriving at Riga Central Station at 8:46 p.m.

Initially, tickets will be sold to international passengers; domestic tickets for the Valmiera-Riga section within Latvia will be offered in the coming weeks.

"For over a year, in cooperation with Latvian and Lithuanian passenger train operators, we have been serving the Tallinn-Tartu-Riga-Vilnius route, which requires a transfer, and passenger interest has been high - last year, over 16,000 passengers took the opportunity to travel by train from Estonia to Latvia and Lithuania and back," said Mart Ehrenpreis, a member of the board of Elron. "With the addition of the direct Tallinn-Tartu-Riga line, train travel between Estonia and Latvia will become even more convenient. The line is equally important for the people of southern Estonia and northern Latvia, as it helps to strengthen economic ties and promote tourism."

Initially, international tickets will be sold for the Tallinn-Tartu-Riga line, while domestic tickets for the Valmiera-Riga section in Latvia will be offered in the coming weeks.

The Tallinn-Tartu-Riga passenger train service is being launched in cooperation with the Estonian Ministry of Climate, the Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture, the City of Tartu, the Latvian passenger train operator Vivi, and other Latvian partners.

From January 12, the Tallinn-Tartu-Riga train will depart from Tallinn at 2:50 p.m., from Tartu at 5:05 p.m., and arrive in Riga at 8:46 p.m. The train from Riga will depart at 7:38 a.m., arriving in Tartu at 11:25 a.m. and in Tallinn at 1:57 p.m. The first departure on the Riga-Tartu-Tallinn route will be on January 13 at 7:38 a.m. According to the current schedule, the journey from Tartu to Riga takes 3 hours and 41 minutes, while the Tallinn-Riga journey takes 5 hours and 56 minutes.

A ticket from Tartu to Riga will cost between 19 and 22 euros, and from Tallinn to Riga between 29 and 32 euros. The route will be serviced by a two-carriage Stadler Flirt diesel train. International tickets can be purchased in advance online and from the customer service representative on the train.

From January 12, only international tickets will be sold for the Tallinn-Tartu-Riga line. Domestic passengers between Valmiera and Riga are not being served at this time. Elron will begin serving domestic passengers in Latvia on the Tallinn-Tartu-Riga route in the coming weeks.
