RIGA - The situation regarding Latvian sailors in the Persian Gulf region is being continuously monitored, representatives of the Latvian Maritime Administration (LJA) told LETA.
The LJA reports that there are currently 22 Latvian sailors on ships in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz region, and the situation is being continuously monitored. On March 16 of this year, 19 sailors were employed in this region.
It is predicted that the number of sailors working in this region may decrease in the near future, as several manning agencies are planning to rotate crews and are reviewing the terms of employment contracts in light of the current situation.
The administration explains that Latvian sailors employed in the region are primarily associated with four licensed manning agencies. At the same time, the majority of licensed companies have indicated that the ships they service and the sailors they place are not located in the dangerous region and do not plan to go there.
The LJA continues to monitor the situation in close cooperation with industry companies and international partners. At the same time, the agency notes that complete information on all Latvian sailors may not be available, as some may be employed on an individual contract basis.
