RIGA - Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) will call on European and other leaders to take a stronger stance against Russia's "shadow fleet" and strengthen security in the Baltic Sea at the 3rd United Nations (UN) Ocean Conference in Nice, France, on Sunday and Monday, the State Chancellery informed LETA.
The working visit will include informal talks among the leaders and the participation of the Prime Minister in the conference.
Maritime security will be one of the main topics of the conference, including the strengthening of security in the Baltic Sea. Representing Latvia, the Prime Minister will thus pay particular attention to the threat of the Russian shadow fleet, the protection of maritime infrastructure and regional cooperation in this area.
Alongside the French President and the Latvian Prime Minister, almost 50 other heads of states and governments are expected to attend the UN Ocean Conference, including the Prime Ministers of Spain, Croatia, Greece and Ireland, as well as the President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen.
As reported, Latvia has been elected to the UN Security Council on Tuesday for two years - 2026 and 2027. Latvia had to win the support of two-thirds of the UN member states to become a non-permanent member of the council.
