Sevastova and Dukurs named Latvia's Athletes of the Year

RIGA - Tennis player Anastasija Sevastova and skeleton slider Martins Dukurs were named Latvia's Athletes of the Year at last night's annual Sports Awards 2019.

This was the second time that Sevastova has been named Athlete of the Year, and the sixth time for Dukurs.

Other finalists for Athlete of the Year this year included tennis player Alona Ostapenko, weightlifter Rebeka Koha, as well as beach volleyball players Tona Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka. In the men's category, boxer Mairis Briedis, bobsleigh pilot Oskars Kibermanis, handball player Dainis Kristopans and moto-cross rider Kaspars Stupelis were finalists for Athlete of the Year.

Sevastova triumphed in the Jurmala WTA International series tennis tournament this year, which was the first WTA tournament ever to be organized in Latvia. She also reached 11th in the WTA rankings this year, and advanced to the fourth round at two Grand Slam tournaments.

Meanwhile, Dukurs triumphed at the European Skeleton Championships and World Skeleton Championships this year, and placed third at the Skeleton World Cup standings.
