RIGA - Saeima in the second reading today supported amendments to the law on the European Parliament elections that might ban incumbent MEP Tatjana Zdanoka (Latvia's Union of Russians) from repeatedly running for the European Parliament.

Saeima still has to adopt the amendments in the final reading.

The amendments provide, among other things, that a person who has been a member of the Latvian Communist Party after January 13, 1991, may not run for the European Parliament elections.

The proposal was submitted by MPs Aleksandrs Kirsteins (National Alliance).

According to LETA's archives, the Supreme Court discovered earlier that Zdanoka was a member of the Communist Party after January 13, 1991.
