RIGA - The majority of the parliament on Thursday rejected the opposition's call for resignation of Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) submitted by the opposition party Latvia First and some other opposition MPs.

51 MPs voted against the motion of no-confidence in the Prime Minister, while 28 MPs from the Latvia First, United List and National Alliance factions voted in favor. The representatives of Stability, on the other hand, were basically absent.

Silina had already survived the confidence vote a week earlier, but the Latvia First leader Ainars Slesers reproached the Prime Minister for not attending the Saeima hearing on the issue and announced that he would submit another resignation request.

On Thursday, Slesers again criticized Silina's failure to attend the Saeima session, saying that if she did, she would at least have the opportunity to refute the opposition and explain the situation.

The MP spent a considerable amount of time again criticizing the management of Rail Baltica and airBaltic.

MP Antonina Nenaseva (Progressives) linked the activities of Latvia First to the municipal elections, saying that such a request was a pre-election move.

As reported, the opposition politicians submitted these two requests a couple of weeks before the upcoming local elections, accompanied by an extensive debate in parliament.
