Saeima deputy speaker thanks ambassador for strengthening relations between Latvia and Thailand

RIGA - Saeima Deputy Speaker Linda Matisone (United List) on Thursday hosted Thailand's Ambassador to Latvia, Arunrung Phothong Humphreys, on her farewell visit, thanking her for her personal contribution to strengthening relations between the two countries, LETA was told at the Saeima press service.

During the meeting, Matisone noted that next year will mark the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Latvia and Thailand, and expressed interest in deepening political dialogue between the two countries, as well as organizing high-level visits. She also praised the ambassador’s contribution to fostering dialogue with Latvia’s academic community.

Matisone's conversation with the Thai ambassador also addressed cooperation in Southeast Asia. The ambassador emphasized regional cooperation within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and welcomed Latvia’s readiness to accede to the Treaty on Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. Matisone noted that the Saeima approved the relevant bill in its first reading on Thursday.

During the meeting, the ambassador also noted the Thai community in Latvia, saying that approximately 50 Thai citizens live in the country and work in the food service and beauty industries.

Both sides agreed that Latvia and Thailand have the potential to expand cooperation in the economic and educational sectors.
