RIGA - The Saeima in the final reading today adopted amendments to the Animal Protection Law, banning farming of animals will be prohibited in Latvia if its sole or main purpose is obtaining fur.
The amendments prohibit fur farming, but does not ban obtaining fur from hunting or trading with fur.
According to the initial plan, the ban had to be introduced already on 2026, but later a compromise was reached to move the date to 2028.
The Food and Veterinary Service informed LETA that at present there are four fur farms in Latvia, all of them are growing minks.
