RIGA - Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (New Unity) rejects Russia's claim for compensation for the demolition of the monument in Pardaugava.
The minister wrote on his Twitter account that Russia has stated that it will want compensation from Latvia for the "demolition of the occupation monument".
Rinkevics, ''speaking in the words of a classic'', wrote that Russia "will not receive compensation, but the ears of a dead donkey".
According to LETA archives, in 2005, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia will never agree to talks on territorial matters with the Baltic states.
When commenting such a possibility at the time in regards to the territory of Abrene (Pytalovo), which was annexed by the Soviet Union, Putin said: ''They will not get Pytalovo, but instead the ears of a dead donkey''.
