RIGA - Riga will compete with eight other cities for the European Green Capital Award, the External Communications Department of Riga City Council informed LETA.
Riga Municipality submitted its application for the 2026 European Green Capital Award at the end of April.
The other candidates are the Portuguese cities of Braga and Guimaraes, the Austrian cities of Linz and Klagenfurt, the Spanish city of Cordoba, the Romanian city of Brasov, the German city of Heilbronn and the Polish city of Rybnik.
The finalists will be announced in July and the winner in October 2024.
The European Green Capital Award is presented each year to a European city with a population of more than 100,000 and a record of being a leader in environmental sustainability.
Technical assessment of the applications was carried out by a group of independent experts.
The finalists and winners will be included in a network of leading cities sharing knowledge and best practices. The European Green Capital 2026 will be awarded a EUR 600,000 cash prize to support environmental action on the ground and create an even more ambitious vision.
