RIGA - Earlier this week in Riga, a man killed his 76-year-old mother by throwing her off a fourth-floor balcony, the State Police informed LETA.

On the night of March 2, the police received a call from residents in an apartment building in Latgale neighborhood about a conflict in an apartment, and that a criminal offense may have been committed.

A conflict had broken out in the apartment between a man and his mother. The man had beaten his mother up, then threw her off a fourth-floor balcony, killing her.

The moment police officers opened the door of the apartment, the suspect also jumped from the balcony, sustaining various injuries. He was taken to a hospital.

Before that, the police had not received any reports about conflicts between the two persons, but the male suspect, born in 1978, had previously been arrested for assaulting law enforcement officers or other public officials.

The police have started a criminal case on murder. If convicted, the man can be sentenced to five to twenty years in prison and probation supervision for up to three years.
