RIX Riga Airport has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Association of Ukrainian Civil Aviation Airports (AAUCA), aiming to support Ukrainian airports in restoring operations and, in the future, facilitating their transition to airfield certification in accordance with European Union standards once the war initiated by Russia comes to an end.

The memorandum outlines cooperation between the two parties in areas such as staff training and professional development, knowledge exchange, and consultations on preparing Ukrainian civil aviation airfields for certification in accordance with the requirements of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

“This memorandum underscores Riga Airport’s strong commitment to supporting the Ukrainian aviation sector during these challenging times by sharing our expertise and contributing to the restoration of Ukrainian airport operations after the war. Riga Airport’s airfield was certified to the high EASA standards in 2018, and the experience gained during this complex process will be valuable to our Ukrainian colleagues should they decide to pursue EASA certification for their airports,” said Laila Odiņa, Chairperson of the Board of RIX Riga Airport.

The memorandum also covers cooperation in training, with RIX Academy — an aviation training centre accredited by Airports Council International (ACI) — providing support to maintain and enhance the skills and qualifications of employees from currently non-operational Ukrainian airports. The academy offers a wide range of high-quality training courses across various aviation fields.

During their visit to Riga, the Ukrainian delegation familiarised themselves with the operations of Riga Airport and Latvia’s civil aviation system as a whole, and also took part in the Riga Aviation Forum.
