Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), Latvia’s leading medical education institution, will launch an upgraded Medicine study programme in autumn 2025. Designed to meet the challenges of today’s healthcare landscape, the new curriculum introduces advanced research training, digital competencies, medical law, and military medicine.
The RSU Medicine programme, a cornerstone of the university since its founding 75 years ago, has long been synonymous with high quality and forward-thinking education. In 2024 alone, nearly 500 students completed the programme, reinforcing RSU’s vital role in shaping healthcare professionals both in Latvia and internationally.
The upgraded Medicine programme has been redesigned to reflect the challenges and opportunities of today’s fast-changing world. Developed in close cooperation with students, healthcare professionals, employers, and academics, the new curriculum integrates cutting-edge knowledge, a broader course offering, and a renewed teaching methodology that prepares students not just to adapt to change, but to lead it.
Among the significant additions is a strong emphasis on research and scientific thinking. Students will develop key competencies such as formulating research objectives, critically reviewing literature, and analysing data. A new course in medical law will provide insights into both Latvian and international legislation, while civil defence and military medicine will be introduced to address emerging global realities.
To ensure alignment with global standards, the new programme is currently under review for accreditation by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
Another standout feature of RSU’s approach to medical training is the use of high-fidelity simulations. The RSU Medical Education Technology Centre (METC) – the only simulation centre in Latvia and the largest in the Baltics – has already trained over 28,000 students. The centre offers cutting-edge infrastructure and equipment, allowing students to gain practical experience in a safe, controlled environment that mimics real-life clinical scenarios.
The new programme reflects the changing landscape of medicine, where digital tools, artificial intelligence, and legal and entrepreneurial knowledge play an increasingly central role. Students will learn how to navigate and harness these tools to improve patient outcomes and contribute to the healthcare systems of tomorrow.
The upgraded Medicine programme reinforces RSU’s mission to provide high-quality, forward-looking education that prepares students to meet contemporary healthcare challenges head-on. With its modern curriculum, international outlook, and commitment to excellence, RSU continues to be the first choice for aspiring doctors in the Baltics and beyond.
Developed in close collaboration with students, healthcare professionals, and international partners, the programme is currently under review for accreditation by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). The updated approach combines cutting-edge theory with extensive hands-on experience, including simulation training at the RSU Medical Education Technology Centre—the largest of its kind in the Baltics.
In 2024, RSU had nearly 12,000 students, including 26% international students from 82 countries. Nearly 500 students graduated from the Medicine programme last year, with 92% securing stable employment in Latvia and abroad. The university’s extensive network of over 100 partner clinics across Europe and 15 study centres outside Latvia further supports its commitment to practical and globally relevant education.
Applications for the new programme open soon.
