President urges Zimbabwe to support Ukraine Peace Initiative

RIGA - During a meeting today with the Speaker of the Zimbabwean Parliament, Jacob Francis Nzwidamilimo Mudenda, President Edgars Rinkevics called on Zimbabwe to support the Ukraine Peace Initiative, LETA was told by the president's advisor Martins Dregeris.

The two sides met to discuss bilateral relations, Russia's aggression against Ukraine and cooperation in international organisations. Rinkevics appreciated Zimbabwe's willingness to strengthen political dialogue, including parliamentary cooperation.

During the meeting, the president noted Russia's responsibility for the aggression against Ukraine and its negative impact on the countries of the global south. Rinkevics stressed the need to stand up for respect for international law and to work together for a just peace.

The two officials also discussed cooperation between the two countries in international organisations, in particular the United Nations, and the need to promote diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in the Middle East and to prevent civilian suffering. The President stressed that Latvia was also in favor of strengthening cooperation with the African Union.
