RIGA - On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Latvia's independence, Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) is calling on residents to appreciate that we have a free and independent Latvia.
At a press conference following a meeting with President Edgars Rinkevics on Wednesday, the prime minister thanked all those government and state officials, the public and journalists who have worked for the past 35 years so that Latvia could celebrate the restoration of its independence.
"We may think that we are facing many challenges, but we can only imagine what courageous decisions people had to take in the 1990s, what life was like, and what challenges society faced in the uncertain times, but together we all believed in a free Latvia," said Silina.
We have a free Latvia, our country is a member of the European Union and NATO, Silina emphasized. She thanked all those who stood up for values important for Latvia, including the Latvian language, during the last 35 years.
"For all of us, the anniversary of the restoration of Latvia's independence is both a time of remembrance and a time of celebration. We should appreciate what we have now - a free and independent country, regardless of what some of our neighbors are like. They are aggressive and we have to reckon with that, so it is important to care about our security," said Silina.
Rinkevics also stressed that freedom and independence were invaluable. The president wished the people of Latvia to celebrate both May 1 Labor Day and the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Latvia's independence on May 4.
"Let us all remember that freedom and independence are invaluable," said the president.
