RIGA - Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) has called on her government to decide this Tuesday on two inquiries related to the implementation of the Rail Baltica railway project, according to the prime minister's post on X.

The prime minister writes that an inquiry under the leadership of the Finance Ministry's state secretary will have to assess the procurement organized by the Baltic joint venture RB Rail, while a probe led by the Economics Ministry's state secretary will have to provide clarity about the unfinished bridge piers in the Daugava River and railway overpass in Marupe.

"The public must have clear, detailed information on the decisions taken so far, their justification, and impact on the state budget, as well as the potential responsibility of the officials involved," Silina said.

She also says that the Rail Baltica project must be completed, as this is a matter of security and development. At the same time, it is equally important to implement the project responsibly and transparently, the prime minister believes.

The total cost of the project could reach EUR 23.8 billion in the Baltics, according to the cost-benefit analysis. A previous cost-benefit analysis in 2017 estimated the total cost of the project at EUR 5.8 billion.

The Rail Baltica project will build a European standard-gauge railway line from Tallinn to the Lithuanian-Polish border to connect the Baltic States with other European countries by rail. A new 870-kilometer European-standard (1,435 mm) railway line with a maximum train speed of 240 kilometers per hour will be built in the Baltic States.

Rail Baltica is a double-track, European standard 1,435 mm gauge electrified railway for passenger and freight transport to be built from Tallinn to the Lithuanian-Polish border. The overall length of the railway will be 870 kilometers.
