TALLINN – Heads of state and government of the European Union agreed in Brussels on Thursday to open accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said Estonia has been a staunch supporter of the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU.

"The unity of the European Union remains and we can look into the eyes of the candidates for membership because they will be taken into account," the prime minister said.

Kallas highlighted the opening of the accession talks with Ukraine.

"In the brutal war that has been going on for almost two years, we need to give hope to the people of Ukraine. At the same time, they have done an incredible job in meeting the conditions set by the EU and the invitation is a fair reflection of progress. And the European Union is certainly not the only step on the road to helping Ukraine, it must also become a member of NATO, the world's most powerful defense alliance," the Estonian premier added.
