RIGA - An online petition to ban persons with pro-Kremlin leanings from holding positions in state and municipal institutions that has gathered 10,000 signatures will be submitted to the Saeima for consideration soon.
Authors of the initiative plan to submit the petition at the beginning of November when the newly elected 14th Saeima is due to start work.
Over 12,000 citizens have signed the petition so far.
The petition was launched by organizes of the march For Getting Rid of Soviet Legacy, which took place in Riga in May.
The authors of the petition call for a bill that would allow stripping disloyal citizens of their Latvian citizenship and expelling them from the country. They also want supporters of Russia's aggression against Ukraine to be banned from working in state and municipal institutions.
The petition will be sent to a Saeima committee that can decide on forwarding it to the parliament for further consideration.
