RIGA - A number of demands put forward by Russia for Ukraine are unacceptable, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) said after a video call with leaders of the Coalition of the Willing on support for Ukraine on Sunday.
"Donetsk is out of the question - Donetsk is Ukraine. The "special status" of the Russian language is also unacceptable, because we know very well what the consequences could be," said Silina.
According to the State Chancellery, the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing on Sunday was held to discuss practical preparations and support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders who will meet with US President Donald Trump this week, LETA was informed.
During the Coalition of the Willing leaders' meeting, Silina stressed the importance of a trilateral meeting between the president of Ukraine and the president of Russia, in the presence of the US president. "Trump is trying to keep Putin at the table, but we need to be prepared for a sanctions package if talks fail. It is not clear at the moment whether there will be a ceasefire or a peace treaty, but we should be prepared for all scenarios," said Silina.
"At the same time, it is important for us to know what security guarantees the United States is promising to Ukraine - whether it is only military support or actual military presence. Equally important are the US security guarantees for Europe and how they would be provided in Ukraine," Silina added.
The talks followed a meeting between Trump and Putin last Friday and preceded an upcoming meeting between Zelensky and Trump in Washington.
The Coalition of the Willing brings together countries willing and ready to contribute to Ukraine.
As reported, the Trump-Putin meeting was held in Anchorage, Alaska on Friday. During a joint press conference after the talks, Trump described the meeting as "very productive" and said that he and Putin had agreed on "many points", but the details of the talks were not disclosed.
On Sunday, Trump said that Zelensky could end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight.
