The number of people held in Estonian prisons and detention houses dropped below 2,500 for the first time ever at the beginning of this week.
People in custody and convicts serving a prison sentence numbered 2,499 in Estonia as on Monday, including 1,981 convicts and 518 people held in custody. Convicts serving their sentence in open prison numbered 154 and probationers 4,146, the Ministry of Justice said.
Kristin Rammus, spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice, said this is the first time for Estonia to have fewer than 2,500 people behind bars. ...
