November at Tallinn Botanic Garden dedicated to Italy

  • 2021-11-12

November 9th marked the official opening of the Italian month in Tallinn Botanic Garden. The dedicated month takes place as part of the “Embassy of Plant Kingdom” project.

The inauguration event was organised jointly by the Embassy of Italy and the British Embassy as the United Kingdom and Italy are co-hosting the UN climate change conference COP26 currently taking place in Glasgow.

Throughout November, two temporary photo exhibitions will be open to visitors of Tallinn Botanic Garden. An exhibition by the Italian Botanical Society (Società Botanica Italiana) gives an overview of different Italian botanic gardens. The British Embassy’s exhibition “Food Forever” draws attention to biodiversity, climate change and global food security.

A land art project, a winter ornament made using different types of mosses in front of the Palm House, is created in collaboration with the University of Padua Botanic Garden.

Additional activities introducing Italy this month include:

- a guided tour by botanist Urmas Laansoo introducing Italian plants: November 13th at 12pm, registration via bit.ly/Itaaliataimed

- video screenings introducing Botanic Gardens across Italy (Padua, Chanousia, Hanbury Botanic Gardens): November 14th and 27th in the Palm House

- a concert of Italian music ending the Italian month of activities: November 27th

In addition, to learn more about Italian horticulture, Italian plants have been marked in Tallinn Botanic Garden with thorough information signs and Italian flags.
