RIGA - No child deserves to experience war, said Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers), Speaker of the Saeima, at the opening of the exhibition Colors of Friendship: Ukraine - Latvia,
Mierina said at the opening of the exhibition that a brutal war has been ravaging Ukraine for more than a thousand days. It is not only devastating the Ukrainian land, but also its people.
"No child deserves to experience war. Losing families, losing friends, losing childhood - it is tragic. But despite everything, life goes on and the scars of war need to heal. I am truly happy that we, the Latvian people, can find new ways to help Ukraine and its people," said Mierina.
The Speaker of the Saeima emphasized the healing power of art and the possibility to express one's feelings in colors, feeling peace for a moment. "By drawing, children showed their dreams, expressed their hopes and healed the wounds of their souls. At the same time, these works symbolize gratitude to Latvia for our selfless support to Ukraine since the first day of the war," said Mierina, wishing that this exhibition becomes another step in our common journey towards peace in Europe and the world.
The exhibition features some of the works created during the drawing workshops held this summer in Chernihiv, Ukraine, in which more than 100 children aged 7-18 took part.
The workshops offered not only art lessons but also therapeutic support for children affected by the war.
