Latvian weightlifter Viktors Scerbatihs won silver at the European championship (category over-105 kilograms) in Kiev on April 25 with a lift of 437.5 kilograms. The Bulgarian athlete Velicko Colakovs won gold with a lift of 445 kilograms, while Germany won the bronze. Only Scerbatihs still has a chance of competing in Athens. He is currently17th in the world rankings.

Arsenal won the English Premier League three weeks before the end of the season when it drew 2-2 with London rivals Tottenham Hotspurs on April 25. If Arsenal wins its remaining four fixtures, it will surpass Manchester United's record tally of 91 points for a 38-game season in 1999/2000. And if it remains unbeaten until the end of the season, Arsenal will be the first team to achieve this in the top flight since Preston managed it way back in 1888/89. Meanwhile, elsewhere in Europe, Porto was crowned champions for the 19th time in Portugal, and in Belgium Anderlecht wrapped up yet another title.

The organizers of the Olympic games in Athens will have to perform some record-breaking construction work according to the International Olympic Committee, which said that the fixing of two roof-supporting arches must take place by April 28, or else the architectural centerpiece of the games would not be completed in time for the start. Work on the roof has been delayed several times, and many other key projects are still severely behind schedule.

Ferrari's technical director, Ross Brawn, has said that English Formula 1 driver Jenson Button could one day replace Michael Schumacher. Button has had a good start to the season for BAR, including starting in pole position and coming in second at the San Marino Grand Prix on April 25. Brawn told BBC Radio Five Live: "One day Michael's going to stop and you've got to look around and see who's the best at that stage. I think Jenson will be on that list for sure."

Vijay Singh claimed his second PGA title of the year when he won the Houston Open on April 26, carding a final-round four-under-par 68 to fend off Scott Hoch by two shots. Singh won it with birdies on two of his first three holes in the final round. He ended up with a 72-hole total of 11-under 277. Singh is second in the world golf rankings after Tiger Woods. He'll next play in the HP Classic, which gets under way on April 29.
