Bizarre parallel(In response to "Diary of a Baltic Exile" in TBT #383)There was something at once poignant and depressing about this diary account of one exile's return to roots. I am an Armenian-American, born and bred in New York City. I returned to Yerevan with similar pastoral fantasies. In my first year back to the homeland, my brother and I mounted a fabulous production of Fosse's "Damn Yankees" and took the show on a cross-Armenia tour. We did two show-stopping nights in the small town of Echmiadzin.The parallels with the Baltic diary excerpt are staggering. I went to a Soviet era...
