Paul-Eerik Rummo is one of Estonia's most well known poets and certainly the only one to dedicate his creative energies to public life. Once Estonia regained its independence he threw himself into politics, serving as minister of culture and then member of Parliament. In the new government coalition, Rummo, 61, has been handed the portfolio of population affairs - a ministerial post that, given the country's declining birth rate, carries tremendous strategic importance.
