Partisan Kononov has conviction overturned

RIGA - The three-year-old conviction of Vasily Kononov was overturned on Oct. 3 when his offenses were reduced from war crimes to banditry, a charge with a statute of limitations that had run out long ago, thus setting the former partisan free.Andris Strauts, the presiding judge in the case, told The Baltic Times that Kononov had been fighting to "liberate" Latvia from Nazi occupation and that all killed by Kononov and his group of partisans had been armed by the Nazis.Though Strauts had the power to set aside the statute of limitations he declined to do so.The prosecution of Kononov has ...
