If the Latvian postal company Latvijas Pasts fails to quickly develop its courier postal service network, the Estonian postal company will open its own courier service branches in Latvia, the company reported.

Acting CEO Gints Skodovs said that courier services were an opportunity for state postal companies to gain significant additional revenues, but because Latvijas Pasts has not yet developed this sector enough, development of Estonia's and Lithuania's postal companies is slowing down.

As Skodovs explained, it is crucial for postal companies to offer uniform services across the region, and Latvia is dragging behind. In fact, Estonia's courier services are three times more developed than Latvia's, he said.

Skodovs said that one of the best goals for the Latvian postal company would be signing an agreement with the Pan-Nordic Logistic courier service network, which already cooperates with Estonia and Lithuania and services clients professionally.

Skodovs said that Latvijas Pasts had much work to do in improving the courier service quality, marketing and accountancy, but said that this sector would be a good way to "settle in the era of electronic media."
