Insurers' profits double in 2002

Total audited profits of Latvian insurance companies last year reached 3 million lats (4.53 million euros), doubling from 2001.

According to the Financial and Capital Market Supervisory Commission, nonlife insurers posted audited profits of 1.6 million lats in 2002, a 33 percent increase year-on-year, and audited profits of life insurers amounted to 1.3 million lats, up 6.5 times from 2001.

Risk insurance profits of non-life insurers increased considerably last year to 3.3 million lats as opposed to 886,000 lats in 2001.

At the same time, life insurers suffered a loss of 228,000 lats from risk insurance in 2002.

In 2001 life insurers saw losses both from risk and life insurance at 34,00 lats and 382,000 lats respectively.
