The Lithuanian Economy Ministry has sent an initial request to the European Commission for suspension of duties on imports from around 10 countries outside the EU after the Baltic country joins the bloc in May 2004, the daily Lietuvos Rytas reported on May 20.

"The initial request is for goods imported by the country's largest companies - nuclear fuel assemblies and reactor components imported by the Ignalina nuclear power plant, ammonium and other components needed for fertilizer production, etc.," Romualdas Rauckis of the Economy Ministry was quoted as saying.

"Suspended duties would be in place from May to early July," he said, adding that the ministry was preparing a second request for suspension of import duties in the second half of 2004, which would contain a considerably longer list of goods.

Knowing that the European Union applies higher duties on products they are importing, Lithuanian companies can request suspension of tariffs.

Their requests will be analyzed and forwarded to the European Commission.

Specialists at the Economy Ministry have established that Lithuania's entry to the EU would bring about major changes in trade conditions with 15 countries, including Russia, the United States, Canada, Belarus and Ukraine.
