Exclave leads Russia in HIVSome 4,036 HIV cases were registered in the Baltic region of Kaliningrad as of May 1, 2003, which is 2.7 times above the average in the rest of Russia, the Kaliningrad AIDS Prevention Center reported. The number of HIV/AIDS cases per population of 100,000 has reached 426 in Kaliningrad, far above the average indicator of the Russian Federation. Most HIV-positive persons live in the city of Kaliningrad (72 percent). Some 521 HIV patients have died from the outbreak of the infection, most of them from drug overdose or poisoning.
