Output jumps in Latvia

Industrial output swelled 11 percent in Latvia in March 2003 year-on-year, the national statistics office reported.

Of the total, the extraction and quarrying industries saw output surge 75 percent, manufacturing grew 8.8 percent, gas and water supply rose 1.7 percent.

The statistics office reported that industrial output rose 29.4 percent in metal works production, 17.1 percent in wood and timber production, 12.6 percent rubber and plastics production, metal production 10 percent, mechanisms and equipment production 9.8 percent, furniture production 9.3 percent.

Output volumes decreased in production of transportation means like ships, boats and repair of rail engines and rolling stock was down by 12.9 percent, chemical substances and chemical fibers production 10.4 percent, garment production 8.4 percent.

In the food and beverage industry output dropped 2.4 percent in March 2003 year-on-year, with fish and fish products output falling the sharpest by 21.1 percent, and production of animal fodder by 7 percent.
