Ten years ago

One person is killed and dozens injured in Tallinn's Town Hall Square when scaffolding on a building falls during the celebration to welcome the return of Estonia's Olympic team from Barcelona. The accident occurs just as the returning athletes are approaching the square.

The Baltic states reject Russia's "unacceptable terms" for withdrawing its troops from Baltic territory. The proposal asserts that a variety of strategically important ex-Soviet military bases must remain on Baltic soil even after troops leave.

Latvia's Popular Front and the Constitutional Party announce they favor holding elections for the Parliament no later than March 1993 and urge lawmakers to adopt a new election law by the end of the year.

Five years ago

Lithuanian prosecutors an-nounce a breakthrough in the investigation against alleged Nazi war criminal Aleksandras Lileikis, accused of turning over scores of Jews to the Nazis during World War II. Jewish leaders say prosecutors have proof that he signed documents that sent Jews to their deaths.

Latvia's Parliament votes overwhelmingly to support a new government headed by ex-Economy Minister Guntars Krasts. The government, a coalition of right and centrist parties, took office after Andris Skele was forced to resign.
