Moldova’s progress toward EU is important for security of all of Europe - Kalnina-Lukasevica

RIGA - Moldova’s progress toward the European Union (EU) is significant not only for Moldova itself but also for the security and stability of all of Europe, emphasized Zanda Kalnina-Lukasevica (New Unity), Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, during a meeting on Thursday with Moldova’s Ambassador to Latvia, Mihaela Mocanu.

During the meeting, the officials discussed current developments in Moldova’s European integration process and shared experiences in countering hybrid threats posed by Russia.

Kalnina-Lukasevica noted that Latvia can assist Moldova by sharing its experience in European integration matters, while Moldova can provide Latvia with valuable insights into countering Russia’s hybrid warfare activities.

The parties also discussed the two countries' cooperation to date, including Latvia’s support for Moldova’s reform efforts and the sharing of experience on European integration issues. The participants in the meeting reaffirmed their readiness to continue close parliamentary dialogue and practical cooperation in the future.

Kalnina-Lukasevica expressed high praise for Moldova’s resilience in the face of large-scale attempts of foreign interference in recent years. She emphasized that every step Moldova takes toward closer integration into the European space simultaneously strengthens European security, democracy, and resilience against external threats.

For her part, the ambassador thanked Latvia for its support to date in implementing reforms, highlighting the importance of Latvia’s experience and expertise on Moldova’s path toward full EU membership.

According to the Saeima Press Service, Kalnina-Lukasevica is one of the rapporteurs on Moldova at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and regularly monitors the country's reform process, and maintains a dialogue with Moldovan officials on issues of democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. She also serves as the head of the Latvian delegation to PACE.
