The Baltic Index calculation methodology

  • 2000-01-06
The Baltic Index (BI) is a price index of the stocks included on the
joint Baltic List of the Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius stock exchanges.
It measures the price changes of the stocks included in the index.
The principle underlying the BI is that on the launch date of the
index an investor invests 100 euros into each of the stocks included
in the list. On the initial day the value for each stock in the index
is 100, as is the value of the overall index. The value of the index,
and for each stock included on the list, each day indicates how much
gain or loss has been incurred since the launch of the index.

The index is calculated in the following manner: On the launch date
of the Baltic List the closing price of each stock will be used to
determine how many shares have been purchased for the EUR 100
investment. This is the "number of shares" for each stock in the BI.
The BI is the sum of the daily values in euros of each of stocks on
the Baltic List, divided by the number of stocks on the list.

On the launch day of the Baltic List and the BI, the daily value for
each stock is EUR 100 as this is the initial amount of investment.
The sum of the values is 1,300. Dividing this by the number of stocks
included on the list (13) brings the initial value of the index to
100. Each day the closing price of each stock in its domestic
currency and the official euro exchange rate as determined by each
country's central bank will be used to determine the share price in
euros for each stock on the Baltic List. This daily euro share price
for each stock on the Baltic List will then be multiplied by its
"number of shares" to give the daily value. This figure in fact tells
you the daily value of your initial EUR 100 investment in each stock.
The daily values for every stock are then added up and divided by the
number of shares on the Baltic List to produce the index's daily
value.

The BI will be adjusted in case of changes in the Baltic List as well
as in case of stock splits and bonus share issues. Details of
adjustments will be published accordingly.
