Latvia's Keramika (Ceramics studio in Jelgava) churned out a record
9.999 meter long traditional figure-eight sweet bread (klingeris) in
celebration of the millennium and to be registered in the book of
Guinness World Records.

Latvia holds an annual competition for the largest klingeris in
Latvia - currently 3 meters, and Modris Malci-nieks, public relations
manager for Latvia's Ceramics thought why not go for a world record
(previously 9.2 m) and consulted Guinness.

Malcinieks said it was a way "to make Latvia's and Jelgava's and
Zemgale's name be known throughout the world. To date, Latvia is not
mentioned in the Guinness records."

In consultation with Jelgavas Maiznieks (Bakery) the loaf was made
without conservatives, and consisted of flour, sugar, eggs,
margarine, raisins, nuts, milk, water and glazing. It was devoured
after official measurements were taken by 2 experts and a jubilant
presentation on Dec. 30. A kiln is not really ideal for bread making
noted the director of Jelgavas Maiznieks (known for their superb
klingeri) but Malcinieks assured TBT that the kiln was ecologically
hygenic and the klingeris was definitely consumed with relish.
