Gulbene tragedy spotlights death penalty

RIGA - The townspeople of Gulbene buried a nursery school teacher and three pupils Feb. 27 while the man held on killing them with an ax and a knife is being held in a Riga jail, charged with murder. Victims of the Feb. 22 knife and ax killings were Anzelika Zvigure, 31, Anastasija Cernova, 6, Olga Kazacenko, 5, and Viktorija Rozina, 4. About 1,200 attended the funeral where three Russian Orthodox priests from Riga, Balvi and Rezekne officiated.
