Referendums are a good way of finding out what the people of a country think about one issue or another. Latvia has held a number of referendums during the 20+ years since the restoration of its independence. One, for instance, was held on the subject of whether Latvia should join the European Union (the vote, of course, was in favor). Another was held last year on the topic of whether Parliament should be dissolved (the vote, of course, was massively in favor). Most recently, there was a referendum on whether the Russian language should be given the status of an official state language ...
